Hi Everyone:
Today was Ericka’s 14th “Chinese Birthday” and being the fabulous Mom I am, I took her to see the world! Complete with miniature tiara, what 14 year old can say she spent her birthday in China visiting the world? The Thompson’s, Ericka and I board a shuttle bus, which took us to the Guangzhou East Railway Station, where we caught the high speed train to Shenzen. Shenzen is a Chinese Special Economic Zone (SEZ) very close to Hong Kong and the South China Sea. It is very obvious that it is a prosperous and booming city. The buildings are all new and very nice. The city is impeccably clean and organized. We then jumped off the train and onto the Metro (subway) and went to “Windows on the World.” It is a very interesting theme park and there are miniature versions of all the wonders and tourist areas of the world. We saw the Eiffel Tower, a Japanese water garden, the Matterhorn (where Ericka and Andrew went snowboarding. Yep, snowboarding indoors in China!) They also had a really nice indoor ice rink. We also visited Egypt, Myanmar, London, Venice, Rome, Germany, the Grand Canyon and many other interesting places. Very odd and cool at the same time! We ate lunch at a Japanese restaurant where I had an egg tofu dish and Ericka had pork rice. Abbie was absolutely a doll today! Her personality really shined and she made friends with everyone on the train and Metro. She was the happiest, silliest kid ever! Finally, we are starting to see the real Abbie. In this area of China, there are many minority people. There are approximately 55 minority groups, with the Han Chinese being the majority. While at the park, we saw three older women dressed in their beautiful minority clothing. They giggled when I asked to take their picture. On the train ride back, I met a Teochew woman who also speaks English. In Teochew, Abbie called her “auntie” and the woman could communicate with Abbie. She helped me write down many useful words so I can communicate simple things to Abbie and help keep some of her heritage alive. Abbie was chatting with everyone, giving them “High Fives” and just had a great day. She was such a blessing today! It was truly an awesome, exhilarating and very exhausting day! Happy Birthday Ericka – we love you!! You are mom's princess in a tiara. :) XOXOXO
