Wow, I can't believe I haven't posted anything to the blog since February 23rd. I am a lousy blog friend. Sorry gang! Let's see, what has been going on lately in our lives? I was supposed to leave for Cambodia this upcoming week on an Operation Smile medical mission. The original student sponsor had a death in his family and was unsure if he would be able to go. So, I was on stand-by. Fortunately, or unfortunately, the sponsor was able to go and I pray that he and the students have a fabulous, safe journey and change many lives! Hopefully, I will get another opportunity sometime this year. I am also waiting to learn more about a medical research trek my friend Michelle and I signed up for. My doctor told me about it and I thought what the heck?! Free vacation to Antigua, Guatemala. All expenses paid and get to travel with Doctor's Without Borders. All I have to do is wear a patch. Some people will receive a placebo, others will receive an investigatory anti-diarrheal patch to prevent Montezuma's Revenge. So common in third-world countries. I will still take my bottle of Cipro with me just in case. Ha ha!! My good friend Carolyn just got approved by her medical plan for Gastric Bypass surgery. She is hoping to have her surgery around the 25th of the month and is totally ecstatic about it. Michelle and I are wrapped up in her excitement. We pray for her safety and that this opportunity will help her to find the happiness she is searching for. I would also like to ask all my friends to pray for my mom's best friend Jody. She is in her early '60s and has a 27 and 29 year old daughter. She is much, much too young and she needs to be there to see her daughters marry and have children. She is much too young to be dealing with a newly diagnosed malignant brain tumor. Keep Jody in your thoughts and prayers as she begins her treatments, that she can be strong and beat this thing. Kids are all doing great and only a few more months until my soon to be 18 year old son graduates from high school. Wild, seems like yesterday he was just a baby. Overall, our family is happy and very healthy. Just the way we like it! Hope you are all great as well.

Abbie was invited to Raymond Searles, Jr. (Jr. for short) 2nd birthday party. His mom, Erin, and I work together and such a blast. Abbie had so much fun! What a little social butterfly she is, and so full of joy and life!

Kyle, Ericka and I had the day off so we thought, what the heck, let's brave the crowds and go up to Park City and join in the Sundance Film festivities! It was so nice to get out of the yucky January inversion and up into the warm, blue skies. While there, we ate lunch at a nice restaurant and saw a few celebrities including: the back of Robin Williams' head; the back of Jim Carey's head; the side of Liam Neeson's head; the back of Ewan McGregor's head and the back of Akon's head. Ha ha!! the best part of the day was chocolate!! :)

We have a family membership to the Tracy Aviary and the girls LOVE to go visit their birdie friends on a regular basis. This Saturday was the 50th birthday of "Andy" the Andean Condor, and of course we had to go! Andy got a special treat, the kids got cake. We even saw an indoor bird show in the vintage mill. Oh, and Abbie terrorized a peacock. What more can you ask for other than three extra cute little girls! :) (p.s. can you find the Snowy Owl??)

This last weekend, all three girls were invited to a birthday party for a little boy from their school. The kids had an absolute blast bouncing, eating and even roller skating! Sorry I've been such a bad blogger lately! Between Ericka's two orchestra concerts (one at school and one at Barnes & Noble Booksellers); Shang Dan Kuai Le celebration at Chinese Class; tons of shopping and wrapping; sick family members and work...I'm worn out! Here are some pictures from our latest escapades. After nearly 12 years of admiring people's Sparkleball Christmas decorations, thanks to Dan, I finally have one of my very own!! The first had a little mishap due to one of the kids, but Dan pulled it off an made a new one for me the next day. Yippee!! :) We also learned that our Shih Tzu, Fred Fred, LOVES the snow!! He bounces and prances through it just like a reindeer. But, the funniest thing of all is watching his pink tongue swipe out and link the snow just like a snow cone. Cute little dude! Our love you to you and we wish you a Merry Christmas (Sheng Dan Kuai Le!)

On Saturday, Lucy had her birthday party at Bounce "U" and there were over twenty kids and lots of moms there to participate in the fun! Lucy had so much fun bouncing with her friends! It was especially wonderful, because Marry, Kaia and Beckett were able to come and good luck brought Melanie, Meili and Lili to Utah at just the right time! There were six kids adopted from China, one adopted from the U.S., a friend who just moved here from Israel and speaks Hebrew, Lucy's friend from school who had cleft surgery the same day as Abbie...and many, many other special friends she had made at Kindercare. It was a day the little "princess" is sure to never forget! Marry and Melanie - I love you both! Thank you for making the day special for me too! (Michelle, your fabulous panda cake was a HUGE hit with the kids! :)

Here are some cute pictures of Lucy at her Chinese class birthday party. Kang Laoshi (Teacher Kang); Lu Ji Chun (Lucy); Lu Mei Xin (Grace); Bao Ming Ming (Liza); and Buo Chuan (Andrew) all had a great time decorating Lucy's cake with fresh fruit and learning how to say "I want banana...apple...pear...orange" in Mandarin at the same time! Hi Everyone: Next week, November 26th, my sweet baby Lucy turns four years old! It's hard to believe. To celebrate her special day, my beautiful friend, co-worker and fabulous pastry chef, made this absolutely amazing Kung Fu panda cake for Lucy! I was so blown away that it actually made me cry. On Sunday, we ate lunch courtesy of coupons from my Porcupine Grill Cycling Team. While we were eating, we realized they were playing really bad '80's disco music. We're talking Olivia Newton John! It made me laugh, because Abbie was dressed like an '80's disco diva! After lunch, we went to the mall to visit Santa at his new and really cool Norad Tracking Station. Grace had a melt down, Abbie drooled on Santa and Lucy refused to talk. The picture was awful, but I bought it because some day I can show the girls and tell them, "you were lucky Santa came to bring you presents in 2008!" Ha ha ha!! :) Have a great week everyone! P.s. Abbie is doing really great from her surgery. She speaks more clearly and does not seem to be in anymore pain. What a trooper!

Abbie's Second Cleft Palate Surgery was a Success!

Hi Everyone: On Monday, November 11th, at 11:00 AM (lucky numbers?), Abbie had her second cleft palate surgery. Dr. Morales was very happy with the outcome. Apparently, her hard palate prothsesis did it's job over the last year, and he was able to remove it entirely and complete the full soft and hard palate closure. Poor little pee wee is in pain, but continues to try to be her happy little Abbie self. She will be home for a couple of days until we can get the pain in control, and she will be on a soft diet for a month! Good thing she likes soft foods! On a funny note, she loves powdered donuts, but can only have squishy food for the first couple of days. Out of desperation to please Abbie, Dan broke four donuts down into the food processor, added some liquid and presto...instant liquified donut batter! Abbie LOVED it! It's all about creativity! While at the hospital, a little friend from the girl's daycare was also having a procedure done by Dr. Morales. It was nice to visit with his mom and have a friend for Abbie. At one point, he was pretty loopy on pain medication and I mentioned that Lucy talks about him all the time. He responded, "Awe, Lucy loves me!" This was so cute coming from a six year old! Barring no palate repairs required, Abbie's next surgery will be scheduled when she is six years old. At that time, they will extract bone marrow from her hip and great a bony gumline for her permanent teeth. Amazing stuff! Love you all! Tracie and Abbie xoxoxoxoxo

Three Beautiful Years

It's been almost three years now since our beautiful little Lucy Mae Ji Chun came home to her family. I have this picture, taken by a friend a the very moment Lucy and her nanny got off the orphanage van and began their entrance into the Civil Affairs Office. This was a life changing moment, because within minutes, sweet little Lucy in her pink padded coat, officially became our daughter forever. I cannot imagine our lives without her. I love her beautiful, full face smiles, how she loves to sing to "The Killers" music, her dancing in Chinese class, her squishy nose, and her silly antics. Lucy, you are our daughter to the very core of our hearts and souls.

Had a fabulous time last weekend with the family at the Hee Haw Corn Maze in American Fork, Utah. We went on a hay ride for candy, rode pedal cars through the corn stalks, pet farm animals and Abbie was even picked as one of five children to try to chase down and catch a piglet for a prize. She may be tiny, but she is mighty! I thought for sure she would rustle one to the ground! Then we hooked up with my beloved Stewart Family for fun at Tracy Aviary, Liberty Park and a Chinese food dinner at South China House. Marry, I am still sorry for that lap full of ice water, courtesy of Lucy! (Love you! :)

OKTOBERFEST in Utah

It wouldn't be October in Utah without the first snowfall of the season. Unlike my beautiful friend Marry, I HATE snow with a passion!! It's cold, it's wet, it's miserable. I don't like driving in it, I don't like walking in it. I must have been a cat in my other life!! Hard to believe that Dan and I met in the high mountains of Colorado and used to ski together like wild people. Since moving to Utah, the "California Girl" in me has resurfaced with a vengeance. What I do love about October is the changing of the colors. We can see the mountains turn beautiful Autumn shades from our front window. It is awe inspiring and I wish it would last year around! We took the whole family to Porcupine Pub and Grill for Oktoberfest and had a nice brunch. Here are some pictures of my favorite subjects!

Operation Smile Utah Volunteer Dinner

Abbie and I recently had a wonderful time in Alpine, Utah, at the home of an Operation Smile supporter. The Watkins Family opened up their home and beautiful grounds to provide dinner, entertainment and a great time, for Utah's Operation Smile volunteer base. Don't worry, that's root beer Abbie is drinking! She made friends with the Osmond's too! :)

Chinese Class

Gracie and Lucy are having so much fun at Lao shi Kang's (Mindy's) Chinese class. They go every Saturday morning for two hours and are learning how to write their Chinese characters (especially funny, since they don't even know how to write the English Alphabet yet!); the story behind Chinese traditions and festivals; dance and song; language, and they even get to taste special home made Chinese food! Here are some cute pictures of the girls practicing their characters, dancing and just enjoying their class. We made the decision to wait until next session to start Abbie, but she is definitely benefiting from the learnings as well!

Hi All! Had a great time on the Monarch of the Seas cruise and on the day excursion in Ensenada. Did some shopping in the open market and went to La Bufadora, a sea "blow hole." It was an absolutely beautiful day!! Carolyn, Michelle and I enjoyed 70's music trivia, a bean bag competition, towel folding demonstration, Bingo, and eating, eating, eating. Oh, and we can't forget the Men's Belly Flop Competition into the pool. Gross! Our room was so tiny we could barely turn around, but that's what made it fun! Cruise ships are wild and if you have never been on one, the people-watching factor makes it worth it! Fun time had by all!

Hi All: I talked to my mom this morning and she sounds great! She has 20 staples in her back, and her friend who is a nurse, took off the bandages and said the 4" incision site looks good. It was great to talk to mom and hear the "chipperness" in her voice! Dad has been amazing and is taking good care of mom. What a great Pop I have! Love you both! xoxoxoxoxo

Surgery Update

Hi Everyone:

Abbie had her bilateral Inguinal Hernia surgery last Thursday, and as predicted, she was up and running by the next day. She can only have sponge baths until tomorrow and she has been so cute about just tipping her head over the bathtub!

Mom had her surgery this morning and it took about three hours. Dad sent me a text and said all went well. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers and I will post more when I get an update.

My friends Michelle, Carolyn and I (work friends) are going on a Royal Caribbean 3-night Mexican Riviera cruise from Long Beach to Ensenada! We depart 9/19 and return 9/23. Arriba! We set said on the newly renovated Monarch of the Seas. Here is a brief write-up about it:

Prayers for Successful and Healthy Surgeries

The next few months will be riddled with many beloved family members having surgery. It all begins with Abbie on 9/11. She will have outpatient bi-lateral inguinal hernia surgery up at Primary Children's Medical Center. Knowing Abbie, she will be her usual wild, crazy and extremely active self within hours of her surgery!

On September 15th my beautiful mom Judy, will have spinal fusion surgery on her L4 and L5 vertebrae. She has been in a lot of pain this past year and I hope her three hour surgery at the Sacred Heart Medical Center in Eugene, Oregon, will bring her much needed relief and renewed hope. I know mom can't wait to be up and hiking and birding again - pain free! If anyone knows of any good books, let me know. I am sure mom will be doing a lot of reading during these next several months as she recovers from her major surgery. God bless you mom and we love you!

On November 13th, Abbie will be back up at Primary Children's Medical Center for her second (of many) cleft palate surgeries. Dr. Morales said the roof of her mouth is looking good and the prothsesis seems to be doing it's job. It is now time to begin surgically repairing muscles and building her an actual palate. I am sure she will be in a lot of pain, but again, this is Abbie! She will, with no doubt, recover very fast! All in all, Abbie will probably have somewhere between 15 and 20 surgeries when all is done. We love you little Abbie!

Hah! I love it! My 38 year old sister is the belle of the Denver Roller Derby Dolls (Bad Apples team.) As a Blocker and a Jammer, she takes and gives out hits like a 300lb linebacker, not a barely 100lb girlie! She is amazing and I hope to be able to watch her at her Championship game on October 17th in Denver. I told my sister that she looks "hot" in fishnet nylons and she told me, "Thanks for the compliment about my fishnets. The only problem with the fishnets when you fall, is that you get a floor rash that looks like a waffle! Pretty…" Sounds like a serious roller derby occupational hazard to me! Ha ha!

I thought it would be fun to purchase the girls pretty princess costumes from Kid to Kid, so they could play dress up like real girls. As you know from previous blogs, my three little tykes are quite the tomboys (Dan's influence! Ha ha!) Anyhow, my attempts to make them "pretty" backfired. Apparently, Abbie didn't think she was pretty enough and thought she would make herself up with a little bit of mascara. Did I say "little bit?????" Anyhow, I am not sure if she is Abbie or Alice Cooper. Ha ha! Never a dull moment with that little monkey girl!

Let The Games Begin!

Our family is very excited to cheer on the athletes at the 2008 Beijing Olympic games. Of course, Lucy and Abbie are partial to both of their home countries! :) The games begin on 08-08-08. The number 8 is considered to be very auspicious in Chinese numerology. I am sure China has gone all out to make these games highly successful and very memorable. What a wonderful opportunity for China to make its grand debute to the entire world! On behalf of our entire family, we wish all the athletes a safe and exciting time in China and best wishes in their quest for the Gold!

Pioneer Weekend 2008 Fun!

We took the girls (all four of them) and headed up to Ogden for some Pioneer Day fun! First, we went to Roosters Pub for some grub, then to the Union Station Train and Car Museum. Will filled out bellies with delicious Farr's ice cream at their original store and rounded out our great day at the Hill Airforce Base Aerospace Musuem. Lots of fun and seriously tired girls!!

Last Two Days Playing in Beijing!

Hi Everyone!

I am now wedged into my United Airlines “Economy Class” seat (new name for back of the bus), and am heading home from Qianxi/Beijing, China! It was a long two weeks and we spent much of our time on buses traveling around from location to location. I am really looking forward to Internet access and the modern conveniences of home such as: no “squatty potties”; no “running water trough style potties”; no potties that don’t flush; no potties that back brown sludgy water in the bowl and lastly, my personal favorite, no potties with signs that say “Please only pee here or you will be punished.” No kidding! Clearly, the Operation Smile presence is needed in China as we screened over 200 patients and performed procedures on 191 in only four days. Under the leadership of Han Kai, our Chief Plastic Surgeon, we finished our work early and were able to pack up to prepare for our two days of rest and fun in Beijing. The bus and airplane rides from Qianxi to Guiyang and on to Beijing were uneventful (thank goodness!) The China National Acrobatic Troupe show (Peking Acrobats) was simply stunning, but the rush hour traffic and magical feats of our bus driver stole the show. The next day, we enjoyed a Western style breakfast, complete with soggy pancakes, corn flakes with half and half, something called “Alpine Mash” (yogurt with soggy shredded wheat biscuits in it?) and thankfully, no spicy eggplant. There is a story to that. Everyone in the group loved something called Qie ze (chee ay dzuh). Basically it is battered and cooked eggplant. Some was horribly spicy and others were marginally delicious. You just never knew what you were going to get – that was the fun of it! On Thursday, we boarded a tour bus with a lovely guide named Jenny. We first stopped at a pearl and jade market, where we learned about how they carve jade, the different types and how to tell good from poor quality. Then we went on to a Chinese Friendship Store (government run) to visit a cloisonne factory. We got to see how cloisonné vases are painstakingly made by hand. Although, not to my personal taste, I have a new found appreciation for the hours of hard work that go into making these works of art. I did buy a small pink cloisonné Christmas ornament with two pandas hugging on it for the girls. Next, we boarded our bus for the Great Wall of China. We climbed a moderately steep section of the wall and were asked about every three minutes to stop and have our pictures taken with someone. I even had a little kid climb on my back and give the peace sign for a picture! This was a work of architecture, blood, sweat and tragedy that is unreal and extremely difficult to explain. You know how sometimes you can go to a historical site and feel the ghosts of the people past? That was how I felt at the Wall. It was a clear, warm and lightly breezy day (perfect for climbing) and we could see for eternity in all directions. I have some marvelous photos! After the Wall, we had a few minutes of shopping time and I actually got to ride a dromedary camel! It only cost me $3.50 to sit between the two lumps of the furry, smelly beast and have my picture taken by my new friend Lauren. After my “ride” was over, the camel came up to me and I wanted to get a picture of his soft face and furry lips. It was a GREAT photo opportunity until the great beast’s tongue swept out and up under my camera right across my lips and nose. I was disgustingly French kissed by a camel!! Half a bottle of Germ-X and an entire pack of Listerine strips later, I was able to rid my face of foul smelling breath and was consoled by a team mate who tried to cheer me up by saying, “At least camels can’t lick their butts!” I am not so sure about that. This camel could really have used some Listerine too. We then drove on to enjoy a few hours at the Forbidden City and Tian An Men Square. The square is the largest in city square in the world and can hold over 1 million people. Its vastness was sobering. The Forbidden City was home to approximately 45 emperors during the Qing and Ming dynasties (I believe that is what we were told.) I do remember for a fact that the emperor had one wife and 3,000 concubines! Busy guy! Every night, a eunuch would come to the emperor with the names of the concubines so one could be chosen by the emperor to be his bedmate that evening. Concubines were aged 13 to 16. Older concubines were allowed to remain at the city for the rest of their lives, but no longer spent time in the company of the emperor. Each had their own room and there are over 9,000 rooms at the city! For safety, the emperor would sleep in a different room each night. It would take 27 years to sleep in each room! Concubines could move up in status (even to empress), by producing a son for the emperor. We got to see their rooms and I could just imagine them stepping delicately amongst the water and peony gardens in their tiny “golden lily” feet and silk slippers. Only girls from prominent families were chosen as concubines. Apparently, this was a great, but lonely honor for these women. We then shopped at the Silk Street Market, which completely wore me out. They were ruthless bargainers and it was really annoying. I am sure I got ripped off many times, so I tried not to make many purchases. Three hours later, we boarded a bus for a Peking duck (and more qie ze) dinner and then headed back to the hotel around 11:00PM! Long, but fabulous day! It was a great trip and I always learn something and see something unique and new every time I travel to the birth country of my little Lucy and Abbie. It is a truly spectacular country and it is exciting many more people with get to enjoy it’s splendor during the upcoming Olympic games, where they expect MILLIONS!! Greetings from Qianxi!

On Thursday, it took one plane, one bus and three cab rides by myself from Beijing to Qianxi, but I made it! I am so proud because I HAD to use Mandarin to get around and I actually did it. I don’t know how, but I did. My only goof was that I was at the wrong bus station in Guiyang, the capitol city, but someone helped get me to the right station. I bought my ticket by myself, somehow found the bus and settled into a zebra print covered seat at the back of the very full bus. Shortly after take off, my seat mates all fell asleep – on me. It was very cozy indeed. J When I pulled up to the hospital (that I didn’t even know the name of!) every clapped and cheered! To get to the hospital, I was surrounded by about 30 people trying to communicate to the cab driver where I needed to go. I finally made the international sign of stitching a cleft lip and palate and everyone started nodding and going “Ah ah ah!” The light bulb turned on and the proud cab driver knew exactly where to take the crazy American lady wandering in the bowels of Qianxi. He did not want to charge me for the ride! Of course, I just had to pay him and gave him 50 yuan. I think I made his day. Food in this area is either wickedly spicy, or bland. I am living on a high carb diet of noodles and bread. I could really use some fruit and thing I will hit a street market for an orange I can peel today. I have drank so much bottled water, that I have had to suffer and straddle the “through” with water flowing, which is our hospital restroom. Everyday, they burn deodorizer in the room that smells like pot (not that I would know what that smells like. It’s just what others have told me.) Our hotel is another story. Everyone has something funny or gross about their room to tell. My room mate Carey and I have a leaky bathtub. Every night we stand in about a half inch of slow draining water. We each bought a pair of $1.00 plastic butterfly sandals to wear. One of the doctors stepped into his fiberglass bathtub and broke the tub in half! Ha! Many people have complained of moldy walls, spiders and cockroaches. I feel very lucky to have a decent and comfortable room to go back to! Our hotel is at the base of a hill with an ancient stone temple at the top. At about 6:00AM every morning, we wake up to gongs, the national anthem and someone screaming and chanting. It is quite strange. At night, the karaoke bar livens up and the music is so loud it sound like they are in our room. Carey and I have taken to wearing our airplane ear plugs to bed! Ha! Last night, I went to sleep singing “All Out of Love” by Airsupply with a Chinese accent. Yesterday, we did surgery on 48 patients, including two burn skin grafts. This was my first experience with this procedure and it was extremely interesting. The students have done a phenomenal job with their presentations. Smoking is prevalent in China; therefore, the students have been giving “smoking information” presentations to groups of people. They allow smoking inside the hospital, so there are many, many people to present to! Internet and phone access is next to impossible in this area of China. It is mountainous and extremely rural, so bear with me! This is a large Chinese minority area and I have met Yi (dancing people), Bai (white people), Hanjiu (sweet people) and Miao (mountain people.) They are easy to identify by their unique native costuming. Apparently there are several minority groups in Guizhou. I wish I had time to go out into the rural communities and see how they live. It would be extremely fascinating! One of my favorite things are the unique baby carriers. Some are velvet and intricately embroidered. Some are cross stitched with bright patterns and others are fashioned out of bamboo and worn like a back pack. On Monday, we will go to Qianxi High School #1 in the morning to give presentations about Operation Smile and our student presentations to groups of students. I learned that all of the schools we will visit have over 2,000 students each! In the afternoon, we will visit the local Social Welfare Institute (orphanage) and educate and play with the children. I plan to purchase yogurt drinks and little snack cake for each child as our gift. While I am there, I will also meet with the Vice Director to explain what Operation Smile does and educate the staff about our new Cleft Healing Center in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. Operation Smile – China pays for travel and surgery for the patients and family. As a matter of fact, we have held back 20 Qianxi patients and will send them to the center in Hangzhou to start getting the word out to the community. On Tuesday, we will go to Middle School and High School #2. Also each with over 2,000 students! We will go into the English classes and hear a lesson, and then we will do our presentations. Afterwards, the students are looking forward to practicing their English with us (and I will practice my Mandarin in return!) Last night, I met the English teacher and eight high school students. We talked for two hours and they wanted to give me an official Chinese name. They debated and argued about what to name me. One boy wanted to name me after a traditional Chinese poem, a girl wanted to give me a name with symbolism to Operation Smile’s work in China. They came up with Xie Mei. It has two meanings: 1) Thank you America for helping our children, and 2) Beautiful person. How cool to be given my own Chinese name by the students. I feel very honored. The children are beautiful! There was one little boy wearing a bright yellow knit suit with split bottom pants. He mother was walking him through the courtyard with a harness and I knelt down to take pictures of him. In a split second, he gave me a huge smile and then let loose a powerful stream of pee right up and on to my shoe! Thank goodness they are closed toe and have been on many missions. They had to disinfect my shoe with Germ-X. Ha Ha! I met a family yesterday. The parents are very new wave looking and are only 18 years old. The baby had her cleft lip surgery yesterday and the mother will have her lip surgery today. That is so cool! The father was amazing. The love for his little baby daughter was palpable. You could just see it and feel it throughout the ward. Many elderly grandmothers have brought the babies and they are so tiny themselves. They are beautiful and so thankful for our help. Many have tears in their eyes. The hospital of course does not compare to U.S. hospitals, but it is rather nice and the post-operative rooms have beds and are very comfortable. This is a smooth running mission. In addition to working with the students, I have been helping out with the medical records team and am planning on training on becoming part of the medical records team on future missions. I look forward to having another role I can do with Operation Smile. It is now the Azalea Festival and on Tuesday we are going to a famous mountain covered in bright azaleas. Beautiful! On Wednesday, we head back to Beijing and will enjoy some sightseeing in Beijing at the Great wall, Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden Palace and the Silk Market. Believe it or not, in all my trips all over China, I have never seen the wall! I really look forward to standing on it in my Operation Smile Team China t-shirt with our entire team of 47 people! I think this is the last trip for my Fuji S5100 camera. The battery compartment broke and I have resorted to tape and rubber bands to hold it together. Very classy! I can’t properly explain what it is really like to go on a mission. It is really hard, the conditions are difficult, but it is so amazing and fulfilling. It renews my faith in people and our world and I absolutely love it. On Sunday, I walked across the bridge to buy bottled water and other necessities (toilet paper) and ran into a street market. It was filled with minority people and I observed many things I have never seen before in China. A elderly man was smoking a twisty shaped water pipe and an old woman was fanning incense over what appeared to be tarot cards. I bought the most wonderful piece of sponge cake with orange glaze and coconut, hit a few shops then snuck my way back into the hospital. It’s a lot of fun to explore!

I am probably the most doomed person when it comes to International flights, but after a three hour delay in Salt Lake City, a missed connection to Beijing in San Francisco, a night's stay at the San Bruno Courtyard (no thanks to United Airlines) and a re-booked flight for today (yesterday?) I have finally made it to Beijing! I have to get up at 4:45AM to get ready and catch a taxi at 5:30AM (the hotel shuttle doesn't run that early.) I have a 7:40AM flight to Guiyang, Guizhou Province, then a two hour (bus, cab, car, ummmm water buffalo?) ride to Qianxi. From there, I am waiting for my instructions as to whether I go straight to the hospital or to the hotel first. Crazy, crazy, crazy! On my flight over, I sat with eight girls from the U.S. Olympic synchronized swim team. We exchanged email information and I can't wait to watch the Beijing Olympics to cheer them on to the Gold! I ate breakfast with a really nice older couple who are touring China for the first time. The were able to get me into the United Evergreen Lounge as their special "guest." :) All in all, the flight was uneventful and I am now sitting at the Sino-Swiss Hotel. I am ready for a nap, but instead, I am going to cross the street to the market and do a little shopping for dinner. It is always fun trying to blog in China because all the icons are in Chinese characters. I have to try to remember what is what on blogger.com. Hah! Just part of the fun! :) Admittedly, I am getting really, really good at doing things on my own in China and actually getting around. My Mandarin accent is so good that people talk to me way too fast! Love it! You should see the Beijing International Airport. It is HUMONGOUS!!! The Salt Lake City Airport would fit inside the BIA at least 20 or 30 times over. Lastly, I was able to successfully courier an entire suitcase full of medical supplies for New Hope Foundation in Beijing. Robin met me at the airport to pick up the supplies. It was nice to see him again. He also informed me that one of their babies that had surgery in Singapore was due to arrive back any minute. I am glad he did not have to make two trips to the airport. All worked out well. Love you all and I miss you guys (D, K, E, G, L & A). Okay, I no longer have little girls. Lucy insists I call her "Kitty", only she pronounces the "K" like a "T" (you figure it out.) Gracie is now a "Chipmunk" and Abbie is affectionately known as "The Critter." If I had known that I would be raising wild animals, I would have adopted a Golden Laborador from the Humane Society - at least you can take them it obedience school! Ha ha! Just kidding, of course! :) Oh, and they are quite the little nudists too!

In February/March 2007, I was blessed to go on a mission with a non-profit organization to China. Our very last stop was to New Hope Foundation in Bei Wu Township, Beijing.

I met and fell in love with little "Anna", a beautiful child who does not have the use of her legs, but has very strong arms and hands. She would not let go of my fingers, or my heart. :)

Since I returned from that trip, I have been Anna's monthly sponsor and was blessed to receive an update picture and report. She is very happy, loves to play with toys and playdough. She enjoys singing and can drag herself around and out of the playroom!

I will always remember and love you Anna Gizella! I hope that one day you will be united with your forever family.

Hi Everyone:

Before you even ask, no, we are not adopting number six! However, I have once again been blessed with the opportunity to go on a medical mission with Operation Smile. Unfortunately, the student sponsor for the Qianxi, Guizhou Province of China Mission pulled out at the last minute. Fortunately, I was asked, at the last minute, if I could go with the students (Chelsea and Grace) as their sponsor! I met both girls at the Operation Smile Student Training back in January and they are both wonderful. Normally, sponsors only go on one mission per year, but knowing I have a multiple entry Visa, a passion for China and speak fairly decent Mandarin, I was asked if I could go. I am so blessed to have an understanding husband and family who said "go for it!" So, here I go!! I fly into Beijing on April 14th and will return home to the U.S. on April 26th. I am looking forward to once again serving Operation Smile; returning to the amazing country of China; and helping so many lucky children have a beautiful smile! Love always, Tracie xoxoxo

Anemia (I'd Rather Have an Anemone :)

Hi Everyone:

Dr. Gouw called me and had me come in today for more blood. I have learned that over the span of eight years (my blood draw history), I have progressively developed Chronic Anemia. It is not due to lack of iron, rather a lack of red blood cells, due to whatever autoimmune disorder is attacking and killing my cells. All of the obvious types of autoimmune disorders/diseases have already been ruled out - thank goodness! So, whatever I have has yet to be determined. Hopefully, it is something treatable or curable and my bone marrow can start properly producing and destroying cells again. I have lived in a "tired" state for so long that is has become the "norm" for me. Those who know me well, can you even imagine what I will be like running at 100% cell capacity??!! Who cares about whimpy 100 mile bike rides - I'll go for the 500 mile ride! Ha ha!!

To make a long story short, I have what is called Normocytic Anemia (normal shaped cells, just fewer of them.) Under NA, there are potentially four different sub-classes, or reasons why I might be Anemic. Under the four sub-classes, there are various causes. My form of Anemia is most likely either Aplastic Anemia or Chronic Disease Related Anemia. Neither sounds fun, so I have decided to call it Anemone instead, because they are pretty and flower-like sea creatures. Much more pleasant to think about.

The doctor is looking at my blood tonight under microscope, then I start my weekly draws on Wednesday. I have a feeling I will be seeing a lot of Dr. Gouw for a long time...

Overall, I feel good and am not worried because Dr. Gouw tells me not to worry. :) Easier said than done. Anemones, Anemones, Anemones. Happy thoughts!

No New is Good News!

Hi Everyone:

I had a blood draw last night and another today...I will also be getting them weekly for the next six weeks. Oh joy! I met with Dr. Gouw (wonderful Hematologist!) First, the good news...he does not believe that my bone marrow issues are in any way related to cancer. Yahoo!

Unfortunately, he does not know what is causing the white blood cells to attack and kill the platelets and red blood cells before their "shelf-life" is up, or before my marrow has a chance to make more. Thus the reason for more testing...

My mom wondered if there was some way the white cells could attack the "aging cells." Ha ha!! Wouldn't that be cool??!! I will keep you all posted and thank you for your prayers!

Hi Everyone:

I've been home over a week now and was so proud that I got over jet lag like a true champ! I was marveling at the fact that I am becoming a "professional International traveler!" Ha ha! Unfortunately, on Saturday I can down with a painful virus in my hips, spine, neck and skull. While in the Philippines, I was attacked by weird grass bugs, so my obvious options seemed to be Malaria, Yellow Fever, Dengue Fever, even Meningitis. I even wondered if I contracted some sort of weird "Monkey Virus" from the Tarsiers! Ha ha! Because I had just been on International travel, the Medical Instacare wouldn't even touch me! I was masked and immediately sent to the local emergency room where they took vials and vials of blood and gave me an IV of fluid and pain/muscle relaxant medications. I slept for three hours before being woken up by the doctor. Fortunately, the scary options I originally thought all came back negative. Yahoo! Unfortunately, I learned I have an infection in my bone marrow and that my white blood cell count, platements, and overall blood volume levels are excessively low. The doctor was very surprised how low my levels were and tried not to scare me, but I have to go back in for two more blood draws. Unfortunately, I am now praying for the best and hoping to rule out what the signs may be pointing to - Leukemia. Please pray that I do not have Leukemia and that I will always be here to raise my beautiful children and travel to help hundreds of other children that need me too. Love, Tracie

Hi! Other than a little jet lag, I am home safely from the Philippines and already back to work. I have to tell you the mission was such an incredible experience. I will never forget Sarah and Claire, and all the kind people I met in Cebu. I look forward to sponsoring students on another mission again in the future! I hope that I was able to make a difference in the lives of many children and their families. I will always remember the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center, Asilo de Milagrosa and the Colegio de Immaculada Concepcion and their warm hospitality. The children are so well taken care of. Hi Everyone! Sorry I haven't blogged for days! I get up at 5:00 AM and go to bed every night at 11:30 PM or later. I am all over the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center and just love every single child I have met. Witnessing the surgeries and interacting with the team has been amazing. The Filipino people are very friendly and feed us well! Ugh. Our team's visits in the community have been incredibly warm and welcoming. We feel very privileged. Only a few minor misshaps on the trip, but other than Sarah's passport being stolen, the trip is going well. Never thought I would spend time at the Canadian Consulate on this trip. I am leaving you with some of my favorite pictures from the last few days and promise to write all about the experience when I return home. The island of Bohol was beautiful and it was so cool seeing a real Tarsier, live and in person! My favorite is a sweet little baby named "Honey." Look how cute she is in the hat and how grateful her mother looks! Thank you Dan, for affording me this opportunity! Mom says you are "frenzied, but hanging in there." I will be home soon. Hi Everyone:

I leave early tomorrow morning and have about 32 hours of travel and lay-over time before I finally reach Cebu. Next Sunday is the team day of rest and the Vice Mayor of Cebu is treating the entire team to an Ocean Jet ride to the island of Bohol. The water is like Windex and the sand is as white as can be. The island is famous for its "Chocolate Hills" and the Tarsier (world's smallest primate, but with huge eyes!) What a treat!

Please wish me safe travels and pray that my family will be safe and secure in my absence. I really appreciate Dan and the kids for allowing me this incredible opportunity. I love you guys!

Happy First Valentine's Day Abbie! :)

Although it is her first Valentine's Day, I feel like I am the special one experiencing it for the first time. This morning, while Dan was out shoveling mounds and mounds of snow, the little girls each woke up to a soft little stuffed puppy waiting for them. The squeals of glee and pure joy reverberated throughout the house. Abbie, who previously did not like stuffed animals, immediately latched on to her red and white puppy and gave it tons of loves and kisses. Then the girls had to make their puppies kiss me on the lips. Giggles abounded! Lastly, Abbie hopped up on my lap and said "Ai Le" (love you in Chaozhou) and kissed me on the lips. A drooly, but very sweet kiss! Happy Valentine's Day!!

I am very excited that the Philippines Mission Coordinator has scheduled visits outside of the hospital for our student team. We are privileged to be able to visit the children/adults of the following schools/homes:

1. Asilo dela Milagrosa is an orphanage with babies, high school & college students; it also houses the elderly - total of 79 (29 babies and toddlers.)

2. CIC – Colegio de la Inmaculada Concepcion - is a Catholic school run by the Daughters of Charity. Grade School is coed; secondary school is exclusively for girls.

3. St. Martin de Porres is a school for Special Children, deaf-mute and mentally challenged. 54 students are enrolled from Grade I – Fourth year.

4. Children's Help & Assistance Foundation Inc. is a Center for the Neglected and Abandoned children, ages 6 – 13. Total of 33.

Happy 3rd Birthday Abbie! It's hard to believe you have only been home for three months and this is your first birthday cake ever. We are so happy to be your family and share this special day with you! Abbie LOVED her birthday cake and was just all smiles when opening her presents. She especially loves the Sit and Spin! I will travel to Norfolk, Virginia on January 18 - 21 for training. On future cleft lip/palate medical missions to Asia for, which I am assigned, my role will be to:

Brenda Riley Croft 1964 ~ 2007

Brenda Riley Croft, 43, beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, and dear friend, returned to our Heavenly Father Dec. 21, 2007. Brenda was born in West Columbia, South Carolina on May 8, 1964. From the day she was born she was a ray of sunshine to all who knew her. Brenda graduated from Lexington High School, Lexington, South Carolina in 1982. She graduated from the University of South Carolina where she earned a degree in Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management in 1985, and received the Citation for Distinguished Alumna of Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Administration in 1990. While attending USC, Brenda worked at the front desk of the Columbia, South Carolina Marriott Hotel, beginning a twenty-five year career with the Marriott Corporation, her most recent position being the Director of Operations, MIFS, Global Incentive and GiftCard Marketing. Brenda took a leave of absence from work with Marriott from 1987-1988 to serve an 18-month full-time mission in Bilbao, Spain for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter -day Saints. Her life-long LDS church service also included service in the various auxiliaries, most recently as a Relief Society Teacher. Upon her return she met the love of her life, David Croft and they were sealed together for time and all eternity in the Atlanta, Georgia LDS Temple on January 18, 1991. Together they have three beautiful children: Tyler, Emily and Jeremy. Brenda was a devoted wife and mother; her greatest joy was her family. The lives that Brenda touched are innumerable. Brenda's love of life and exuberance was contagious. She was loved by all who knew her because of her ability to love them. Brenda's radiant smile made everyone feel important, inspiring them to love more, be more, and serve more. Brenda is survived by her husband, David Urie Croft; sons, Tyler David Croft, and Jeremy Riley Croft; and daughter Emily Isabelle Croft. Also surviving are her mother, Lolita L. Riley of Lexington, SC; her father, Phillip H. Riley of Orangeburg, SC; her sister, Rhonda R. Harbor of Lexington, SC, her brother Duane E. Barnhurst of Fruit Heights, UT, and many other loving family members. We will miss our dear Brenda for she was always a great strength to each of us. Her older brothers, David G. Barnhurst and Larry C. Barnhurst, preceded her in death. Services for Brenda Riley Croft will be held Saturday, December 29 at 11 a.m. in the Steed Creek Chapel of the LDS Church, 347 S. 200 W., Farmington, Utah, with burial at the Farmington City Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday, December 28 from 68 p.m. at Russon Brothers Farmington Mortuary, 1941 N. Wow! Christmas as a family of seven has been quite the day! I love the pictures I am posting because I was blown away by the amount of presents under our Christmas tree, and the pictures progressively show kids with "Christmas Burnout." Cracks me up! The morning started off with Ericka accidentally breaking the glass panel on my coffee table by dropping one of my presents on it; Dan made (a mess), I mean waffles with the delicious waffle maker from Tim and Beth (Dan's brother and his wife); and the girls all fought over packages and presents. What Christmas wouldn't be complete without fighting and crying? Ha ha! Despite my grumbling, Christmas was so much fun having our beautiful five children. Love. That is truly what it is all about - especially since I know so many who were not as fortunate as us this year. God bless my dear friend Brenda and her family - Brenda's death has touched me with such grief. Blessings to my family in Colorado, Tucson, Oregon, Washington, Virginia and New York. God also bless Guo Hong Tong and Zhang Xian Hua, the women who cared for and loved Abbie and Lucy during the first part of their lives. We received a letter from Ms. Guo this week and it was so clear how much she loved Abbie (and always will.) These women have given us the most precious of Christmas gifts of all. My thoughts also reach out to all the children in China who wait and hope for life changing surgeries and families of their own. My life is forever changed by the beautiful people of China.

Update on Abbie!

Hi Everyone: I thought you would like an update on our active little Abbie. Things are all starting to make sense now that we have learned through the Occupational Therapist that Abbie has something called Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD.) Some of you have laughed with me when I have told you that she can run into a wall, fling her body off of high places, laugh as cold water is showering down on her head, and not cry a drop when she falls and whacks her head. Of course, as a mom, I thought these things were pretty odd, but just attributed them to her life in an institution setting, her new surroundings and new stimulus. Fortunately, I never thought it was ADD/ADHD, because she can fall asleep easily and stay asleep all night. Plus, she can focus on one stimulating toy for a long time, because she wants to see everything it does and how it works. Now we know the truth and there are actually things we can do!

First off, Abbie is a highly intelligent girl who does not process senses through her brain the way other people do. As a matter of fact, she actually needs and craves “over-sensory” experiences. Truthfully, she would make a great stunt woman - it would appeal to her need for extreme activities! Ha ha!

As a parent of a child with SPD, we will work with the therapist to give Abbie sensory experiences at home and in the clinical setting, to help her learn how to be safe and meet her needs for experiences. Some of the things we will do are actually pretty cool. Fun balls with strange textures, thera-putty, bounce houses, being tossed into the air, sit and spin toys, musical toys, lots of light and sound, sports and more! The more, the better for her!

Most importantly, we have to teach her to be able to recognize hot from cold, wet from dry and how to feel pain, etc. Interestingly, she cannot distinguish these things. Can you imagine burning your finger on the stove and not even feeling it?? If anyone runs across any great and stimulating toys or books, let me know! Otherwise, she is doing great and is so much fun!!

I am so saddened to learn that my peer, colleague and friend of twelve years passed away at her home last night. Brenda Croft was not one of those women you classify as "sweet" or "Lady-like." :) I mean that as a complete compliment to her, which I am sure she would appreciate. Quite the opposite, Brenda was the most loud laughing, full of life person, I have ever had the opportunity to work with. She had the most incredible "business smarts" and loved to travel around the world. She was fearless in her passion and commitment to Marriott and willingly gave 24+ years of her life to this Company. She had a uncanny way of making people feel special and always, always remembered me at the most unexpected times. She knew I loved marshmallows and every Holiday, I would find an inter-office envelope in my in-box filled with marshmallows in all forms (Peeps, chocolate covered Santas, pumpkins, hearts, you name it!) She was a beautiful woman inside and out. She only lived a much too short 43 years and my heart goes out to her husband David (whom she loved dearly), and her three children: Tyler, Emily and Jeremy. I cannot even imagine the pain the Croft Family must feel right now. God bless you and hold you in his loving arms.

How Can You Possibly Stay Mad?

You may think I am super mom and never get mad at my five children, but the truth of the matter is that they drive me nuts just as much as I love them. Just when you are having the most rotten day and your teenager is mouthing off and your toddlers are whining and crying...and you start to think to yourself, "Calgon? Can you just take me away forever? Please?" Something happens and it all changes. Maybe it is your child asking if you can hold them like a little baby. Maybe is is your child reaching for your hand or jumping from the couch into your arms with unbridled joy. Maybe it is an ear to ear grin that melts your heart, or the teenager that tells you that you are a pretty cool mom and her friends even think so...

The other night, I was at my wits end with Abbie. She was wild and would not go to sleep. She kept flipping around and babbling (in who knows what language.) Honestly, she was driving me nuts. I put the blanket over my head and tried to ignore her. Didn't work. Finally, she quieted down and in the still darkness, clear as a bell, she turned to me and said, "Wo ai le", which means "I love you" in Chaozhou (her native dialect.) How can you possibly be mad when your child tells you they love you so unconditionally and when you least deserve it? I love you too Abbie.

I would also like to congratulate Melanie who received her TA for Lili today! They leave 1/16 for Jiangxi to bring her home! YABOOO!!!! :)

It's hard to believe that my little 11 month old, nearly bald, quiet as a mouse and highly observant sweet little baby from half way around the world...is now THREE YEARS OLD! HAPPY BIRTHDAY LUCY MAE JI CHUN LAUGHLIN - OUR LITTLE "FU FU!" I knew before I even saw your picture that I loved you. I just didn't know how deep my love for you would be. You are my beautiful, talented and sweet-hearted baby. I love how you sing Chinese songs at the top of your lungs. I love how you smile automatically when mommy says "Cheese." It's not just any old smile - it is a smile from the top of your head to the tip of your toes! You amaze me everyday with how smart you are. With three older siblings as your role models, I knew you would learn everything so quickly, and you did! Seems like just yesterday that I was holding you like a baby. Just today, after bath time you said, "Mommy, hold me like a baby." I will always hold on to you my baby. Lucy, you are such a joy to us and so many others. We love you with all our hearts. Attack of the Drool Monster

Hi All: Greetings from soggy, wet Utah. I don't mean it's raining...actually it's drooling. A lot! Abbie, that is. She has always been a drooler, but since her surgery, she soaks at least 30 bibs a day! Sometimes I have to double or even triple them up because the drool is literally pouring out of her mouth at the rate of a fire hose. We always know where she has been and where she is...just follow the little puddles and you will find her. Puddles on the floor, puddles on the furniture, blankets, me. Yuck! We are all soaking wet from the Drool Monster and I have started calling her "Slimer" instead of Abbie. Help! Anyone have any suggestions?? (P.S. she just drooled on the computer. Gross.) I am going to make a doctor's appointment, but in the meantime, any ideas are good ideas! Love you all and sayonara from drool-land.

Howdy Pardners: Cold days in Utah require warm, fuzzy '70's style ponchos! At least that is what my mom thought when I was a child growing up in "frigid" San Jose, California. I think I had a homemade poncho for every occasion. So when the granddaughters started to come around, it was inevitable the poncho pattern would reappear! Finally, the handmade, official Grandma Judy ponchos fit "the girls" and we had a little fashion show just for Grandma today. Enjoy the pictures Mom! We love you! Halloween...Surgery...and Six Pints of Ice Cream!

Hi Everyone! Sorry I haven't posted in a while - we have been busy bees! Dressed as gypsies, dolls, Evil Emperor Zurg, Pee Wee Herman, Jessy from toy Story and a Duck, the Linne-Laughlin family went to our friend's (Sean and Jenn) house for an outdoor Halloween potluck in their garage. This is now a tradition going on at least four years! While Dan, Gracie and Lucy were Trick-or-Treating their hearts out on a nice Utah evening, Abbie, Ericka and I stayed home to pass out candy to gobs of little ghouls, lots of princesses and many hungry teenagers. Our friends Keishel and Jon and their two beautiful girls came over to visit (also a Halloween tradition!) We all had a good time and it helped me take my mind of of Abbie's surgery scheduled for the next day. We had to check into Primary Children's Medical Center at 6:00 AM. So, I was up at 4:45 AM (actually, I don't think I slept) and got Abbie and all our hospital gear there on time. Dr. Morales, Dr. Park and Dr. Smyth performed the following procedures: ear drainage and tympanotomy tubes; hearing test; four cavities filled (we thought she would need crowns); one tooth extraction and root canal; teeth sealing and x-rays to determine the status of her permanent teeth. We learned that she has all her permanent teeth except for the left canine. This is good news because Dr. Yamashiro (cranio-facial dentist) will have her own teeth to work with and there will be less likelihood of rejection when she has her bone graft at age six. She also had her preliminary palate surgery and the installation of the hard palate prothesis with two screws...AND three skin tags removed from her right ear! Needless to say, she spent the first 24 hours sleeping on morphine and in a good deal of pain. However, children bounce back quickly! Before long, she was running the hallways, waving to the other patients, made friends with the nurses and making art work in the Forever Young Zone play and activity center for inpatients. We spent one night and now our little leaky faucet (drooling like a fire hose) is home and terrorizing her siblings instead. :) Now on Tylenol with Codeine, Abbie is eating and drinking fairly well, but it hurts me to watch her! Today we went to Burlington Coat Factory to purchase the girls new winter coats. When we returned home, there was a large package containing SIX pints of ice cream on dry ice for Abbie! Special thank you to my friends at work for this special treat! Wow! That's a lot of ice cream to eat!! Abbie's next surgery will be in 9-12 months and will consist of stitching closed the muscle tissue of her soft palate and finalizing the hard palate. Have a wonderful weekend. We love you all! Halloween Pumpkin Patch Adventures!

I love Halloween. The orange and black...pumpkins...and colorful leaves. It is too bad this time of the year passes so quickly. Today we took the girls to the local pumpkin patch. The man who owns that patch has been selling pumpkins there for 20 years and has lived in that home for 50! The girls went nuts and just kept loading the wagon with more and more pumpkins. Finally, we narrowed it down to nine, plus 5 ears of colorful, dried corn. Tonight we will go to a neighborhood Halloween party (if Abbie will mellow out a bit!) Have I told you she is a total maniac yet? The kid never stops moving, even in her sleep. I am a little worried about ADHD, because she can't sit still and has no attention span what-so-ever. Hopefully, it is just some pent up orphanage-related behavior manifesting itself. Only time will tell...and I hope that time goes quickly! Have a great weekend!! Tracie

CDs, VCRs, DVDs, VCDs, CD-Roms, oh my....

Abbie's orphanage gave her a most precious gift of a Cantonese (Teochew?) Children's VCD. For those not familiar with a VCD, it is popular in China and is a Video Compact Disk. After nearly two months, I finally figured out that we can easily play the four disks on our DVD player. I have no idea what it is called, or what they are singing, and the subtitles are all in Chinese characters, but it is really, really cute! The songs are lively and sweet and the animation is adorable. When I turned it on, Abbie went bananas!! She was dancing and pointing to the television and utterly joyful. She must recognize this from her orphanage. Unfortunately, Abbie has the attention span of a monkey and she didn't watch it for long (she hasn't learned the American tradition of being a "couch potato" yet, ha ha!), but what fun to have this special gift to share with her, and with her own children, of her first three years of life in China! Would you believe it actually makes me homesick for China?! Strange, how we are so connected in many ways. On a side note, Abbie will see the cranio-facial dentist tomorrow for a dental impression. Wish us luck as we take this important step towards her surgery on 11/1 and repairing her palate so she may have the gift of speech. Love to you all! Tracie

Greetings From Snowy Utah!

Howdy Everyone:
Greetings from a cold rainy and snowy day in Utah. Ugh. I am just not a winter person. Had a fun time in Chinese class with the Stewart Family today. It is fun to watch Beckett recognize the Chinese words. He seemed to be having a lot of fun and was playing the Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes game. Lucy loves a song about turnip stir fry and makes me do the hand game with her about 100 times per day. Now Abbie is in on the action. I think I just need to record the song and play it on a continuous loop for them! After class we all headed to Fong's Fine Chinese Dining for some grub. Tasty, but nothing like the wonderful food we ate in China. It's just not the same in America - just as American food is just not the same in China. Lucy ate a huge plate of Chicken Lo Mein. Beckett mostly wore his. :) Abbie ate everything in her sight and then some. I was seriously craving a Mango Hello Kitty pudding from the Cow and Bridge Restaurant in Guangzhou. Sigh. When we got home, the girls went down for a three hour nap! Unfortunately, so did I. I have to lie down with Abbie to get her to nap. My plan was to leave the room once she feel asleep and have a couple of hours of quality reading time. Oh well. The nap felt good. :) Have a great weekend everyone! On Wednesday Abbie will have her acrylic prosthetic impression made. They will either have to sedate her or me to do this. Wish us luck! Love, Tracie

Kyla T. Starts Pre-School!

Hi Everyone: I just heard from a family we traveled with in 2005 to adopt Lucy. Their daughter Kyla was 19 months when she was adopted from Fuzhou, Jiangxi Province and her brave dad (Gary) traveled by himself. Kyla kept him very busy and he had the patience of gold! I just remember Kyla dancing on the tables at Lucy's Place during dinner and landing face down in the only puddle of water in sight! Here is Kyla on her first day of pre-school! What a beauty!
